On tweaking the system

The technology behind our podcast has just gotten slightly more complex.

Here’s the skinny.

As some of you know, anybody who was joining the show remotely was subject to an intense echo-back of what was being recorded. This was due to a flaw in the setup that, at the time, could not be avoided.

This is a problem that I’ve since been able to resolve.

With some additional hardware, and a slight tweak to the software, we can now do the following:

  • Separate the remote participant audio from the sound effects output.
  • Mix the studio microphones with the sound effects in the first stage, and route it back into the remote feed, so that the remotes hear the stage one mix.
  • Route the remote participants inbound feed to the second stage mixer, where it is combined with the output of the first stage mixer.
  • Route the final, second stage mix to the recording device, where it is written out digitally in real-time.

What does that get us?

You don’t hear yourself when you talk.
