I spent about an hour tonight setting everything up to record audio for the podcast. I’m rather proud of the set-up, even though it’s so basic. So, here it is.

First, we’ve got the microphone and the mixer. I’ve switched to the shotgun condenser microphone, rather than the desk mic, because it’s battery powered rather than phantom powered. Unfortunately, my board doesn’t supply power to the microphone.

The board is hooked to a couple things. The microphone plugs in on top, and on the back, RCA connectors bring inputs in, and outputs out. But where do they go, we wonder? Look no further than…

…the back of the computer. The audio comes out of the computer and into the mixer, and then the audio from the mixer goes back into the computer. This gives a couple of benefits: I can hear everything on the computer through the headset plugged into the mixer, and I can mix the microphone audio in with the computer audio. That way, when the computer records the Line In, it gets its’ own audio included, along with the audio from the microphone. Just don’t turn the speakers on while the microphone is on. Of course, none of that matters without…

…me! Yeah, that’s right.
Of course, we need Dave too. Naturally, he’s at school right now. He needs to hurry up and get home so we can do this thang.
